Bates Philosophy
Bates Academy for the Gifted and Talented is based upon the following philosophical statement:
"We believe that students, given the appropriate learning conditions,
can and will exceed the standard of performance required for their
assigned levels and will strive for their optimum level of performance."
It is another aspect of the continued commitment of the Detroit Public School System to foster the full development of human potential among our youth. It is recognized that the gifted possess extraordinary abilities to think creatively and critically and that their needs can best be met in an environment that encourages the gifted to explore their own interests, to select some learning experiences, and to develop and use creative and critical thinking abilities. A qualitatively different feature of our school program is based upon the premise that all students are required to do more and learn more in a shorter period of time.
